Get connected to your child’s school experience

In preparing for a new school year, be ready to support your student in seeing how their strengths, weaknesses and behavior can affect them as learners.

Express pride in their growth and progress, offering to help in areas where improvement is needed. For example, “You’re doing great in math! Can you write out how you found the answer?” Then listen to your child without interrupting for a set time.

Some good questions to ask your children…

  • How did you come up with this idea?

  • How can we help you at home?

  • What was important to you about this?

  • If you could do this work over again, how would you change it?

Your children’s teachers will be there to facilitate and answer specific questions if you reach out, but starting the conversation with your child first strengthens your child-parent bond.

Support your child’s independence by helping them learn to reflect on their learning, evaluate and take pride in their progress, take ownership for their work, and communicate this information.
